Crank timpani

The rotary motion of the crank causes an axial displacement which uses an effect known from screw connections. The drive shaft is angled by Hooke ́s joints, further the crank handle is attached on the corner of the wooden hexagon kettle.
The hand-forged base frame is removable, alternatively there ́s also a height-adjustable frame operated by a gas spring.

Spindle timpani

As used at the Schnellar wooden timpani the tuning spindle is led through the hole in the tim- pani head. Though the heads are chadded, no influence on the sound quality is noticeable.
The 19 degrees lateral surface of the kettles is joined by half blind dovetails, which is known as the supreme discipline of carpentry due to its solidity and aesthetics. The head support ring is made of layer-glued ash wood.
